Once I started reading this book it was hard to put down. A story of guilt, tragedy, distrust, romance and forgiveness. Mary Manners writes a great story of struggles that everyday people might go through. ![]() What's the story behind Mary Elizabeth's 'special' treasure that she found in 1953? How did the 1870's gun end up buried in the riverbank? And when? That missing "history" is what makes this so special to us at the museum. After reading Buried Treasures and now Light The Fire, I have found another great author. It has been identified as a double barrel, muzzle loading, black powder 12-gauge shotgun, made in the 1870's. However, it certainly sparked our interest, and we're pleased to add it to our collection. Curiosity led her to dig, and dig, until she found something she called "special". In 1953, when Mary Elizabeth Easterwood was 17 years old, she stumped her toe on something as she walked along the banks of the creek where she lived in Lampasas County. Sometimes items are donated to the museum with a lot of background and history from a donor, so we know all about the item with the who, what, when & why. She always had trouble with mechanical things, thought she might blow it: We learn the many different ways that Esther Greenwood - presumably a stand-in for Plath - toys with so many different ways to do it. The book also may serve as a manual on suicide. ![]() And the ultimate message is clear: living in a world where no one understands despair can drive one to self-murder. If that surprised us, it was because we hadn't read The Bell Jar which is a chronicle in words of how words mean nothing to those in the bog of despond. The same year she stuck her head in the oven and killed herself.
